Essential Functions: Perform repairs (includes diagnosis/repair/replacement of parts) on gas engines, two-stroke engines, transmissions, driveshafts, differentials, and drive axels; hydraulic and air brake systems; steering system parts, power steering, steering linkage, and steering alignment; suspension systems; coil spring, strut and leaf spring, air spring parts, and componentsTest-drive/operate equipment to ensure it is operating correctly and according to standards. Perform repairs (includes diagnosis/repair/replacement of parts) on diesel engines. Test-drive/operate equipment to ensure it is operating correctly and according to standards.Perform preventive maintenance of grounds equipment by following manufacturers' recommendations or using personal experience regarding replacing air filters, fuel filters, transmission fluid and filters, engine oil and filters, changing/sharpening mower blades, lubrication of chassis and cab; repair brake components, steering and suspension, electrical systems, cab H/VAC filters, lighting, including headlights, taillights, strobe lights, and brake lights. Creates preventative maintenance schedule and maintains maintenance records.Repair snow plow systems; including snow plow brackets, hitches, electric and cable controls; salt spreader and pre-wet systems, salt spreader augers, hydraulic motors, electric controls, and bearings. Perform preventative maintenance inspections, equipment and vehicle repairs on automobiles, backhoes, wheel loaders, trenchers, aerial bucket trucks, stump grinders, brush chippers, skid steers, trailer mounted power washers, street sweepers, diesel and gasoline lawnmowers, weed trimmers, blowers, chain saws, rototillers, sidewalk edgers, herbicide sprayers, small diesel tractors, diesel utility vehicles, generators, trash pumps, snowblowers, salt spreaders, and snowplows.Research new suppliers or substitutions for unavailable parts; may fabricate part(s); perform welding and cutting of metals and metalwork. Hydraulic system repair; hydraulic pumps and drive systems, hydraulic motors cylinders, pressure relief devices, system controls, switches, hoses, valve bodies, etc. Cleans shop/work area as necessary.Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation: A high school diploma or GED plus technical training (including on-the-job training) in the repair and maintenance of small and large sized gasoline and diesel engines is required. ASE certifications in engine repair, electrical and electronic systems, brake systems and transmissions are preferred. Experience:Requires three to five years experience repairing gasoline and diesel powered engines. Experience repairing and maintaining two- and four-stroke engines, small diesel engines, hydraulics, and welding is preferred.Also requires a valid Michigan motor vehicle operator's license and a satisfactory driving record, as determined by university policy.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Requires general mechanical ability; skill in the use of hand and power tools and test equipment associated with the maintenance of gasoline and diesel engines. Ability to diagnose gasoline and diesel engine and equipment failures and make repairs to equipment engines, components and systems. Ability to work in a team environment and assist co-workers with other duties as assigned or required.
