This position has a 2-month unpaid furlough in July and August.  Positions with unpaid summer work breaks contain regularly scheduled non-work periods during which the Staff Research Associate remains an employee, and retains health benefits, but is not at work.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Under the general direction of the Department Administrative Manager, the incumbent provides technical support for the Sculpture area, including foundry and wood shop. Art Department faculty and staff support a graduate and an undergraduate program. The Art Department currently consists of 13 permanent faculty, 30 visiting lecturers per year, 8 technical and clerical staff, and approximately 500 art undergraduate majors and 20 graduate students. The major functional areas of responsibility include demonstrations, safety, procurement, and repair and maintenance of equipment.

The Art department staff promote a strong spirit of teamwork and embrace UCSC's Principles of Community in meeting the needs of a diverse range of constituents.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general direction of the Department Manager, the incumbent, in consultation with Sculpture/3D Art Faculty, manages, supervises, and makes productive contributions to the sculpture studios/labs. Provides instructional assistance in those labs, the department woodshop, foundry and sculpture classes. Has extensive knowledge and skills in a variety of sculptural techniques and processes, including but not limited to: 3D digital processes (3D printers, CNC, laser cutter), Metal working and welding, Wood working, Bronze Foundry.  Repairs and maintains hand tools and equipment. Designs and fabricates lab equipment. Researches and orders supplies and equipment. Assists Art Department Operations Manager and SRAs with special projects. 

 

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $5,648.08 - $6,361.72 / Monthly at 80% for 10 months.  Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Instructional and Technical Assistant

• The incumbent assists in the conduct of sculpture and foundry classes. Has extensive and specialized technical knowledge and skill in various sculpture and 3D media. Will discuss technical procedures with undergraduate students in support of class work, or advise them on technical aspects of unique independent research projects. At faculty request may make formal, in-class presentations or demonstrate sculptural and/or foundry techniques and processes, health and safety guidelines and equipment use or studio procedures. May conduct technical workshops in the department 'Workshop' program. Ensures student safety in a facility containing potentially hazardous equipment and materials, by informing and training students in appropriate procedures and practices.
• Enforces safety guidelines in the studios/labs. Instructs and supervises students in tool, equipment and facility use. Assists the professor in arranging field trips and transportation. May participate in, and drive on field trips. Researches and prepares instructional materials for sculpture classes. Assists faculty, and students with quarterly Open Studio displays. Operates gas and electric kilns, and will assist in pouring bronze work for student's in support of class work. Coordinates safety and security of facilities with campus police, Fire Marshall and Environmental Health and Safety. Maintains regulatory compliance with campus programs and government agencies i.e. IIPP, OSHA, EPA.

30% - Studio Management and Supervision

• Manages and maintains sculpture/3D/foundry facilities and their contents. Supervises work-study student employees charged with cleaning the studios and assisting the SRA with various projects. In cooperation with department manager and student employment offices, writes job descriptions, recruits, hires, trains and schedules those employees. Monitors, verifies and signs their timesheets.
• Distributes supplies to sculpture and foundry classes and procures equipment and materials to meet course requirements. Regulates student use of supplies and equipment. Is responsible for the security of studio supplies, tools, and equipment including hazardous materials. Conducts annual inventory of tools and equipment. Consults with and advises sculpture/3D faculty, Art and Divisional staff on improvements to the sculpture and foundry facilities, and on space utilization as it relates to the changing needs of the sculpture program. May participate in major capital planning and may write specifications for new facilities or for minor CAP improvement.

15% - Budget and Purchasing

• Is responsible for managing a budget. Prioritizes expenditures and purchasing of supplies and equipment for sculpture/3D and foundry studios and classes. Analyzes and researches faculty requests, studio and course needs. Utilizing the CruzBuy Purchasing System and in coordination with the Division Business Office, initiates the following: purchase orders, recharges, work orders, reimbursements, transfers of funds and expenses. Purchases appropriate supplies or equipment as required within budgetary constraints. Monitors budget balances, posts expenditures and reconciles them against Divisional ledgers. Makes budget reports, projections, and cost estimates to the department. May write grant proposals for the purpose of funding new and special programmatic needs, i.e. Instructional Improvement Grants.

15% - Equipment Design, Fabrication, Maintenance and Repair

• Incumbent has an advanced level of knowledge and skills in various crafts and technical fields, including welding, metal working, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, plaster, mold making, foundry, woodworking, electrical, mechanical. May use these skills and knowledge to create original designs for studio equipment and to fabricate or initiate and supervise its fabrication and design, also to maintain tools and equipment, make repairs as needed or initiate, coordinate and supervises their modification or repair by campus facilities or off campus contractors.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor of Arts degree with sculpture specialization or equivalent experience / training.
• Demonstrated commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms and striving for an inclusive community that fosters an open, enlightened, and productive environment.
• Demonstrated experience as a Sculpture/3D Art technician
• Advanced level of knowledge and skills in various crafts and technical fields, including welding, metalworking, machinery, 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, plaster, mold making, foundry, woodworking, electrical.
• Knowledge of health and safety issues in the arts.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills sufficient to develop and make presentations.
• Ability to interact with flexibility, sensitivity, and tact in dealing with diverse groups of people.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Ability to research and make creative and innovative use of equipment, tools and materials to accomplish artistic goals.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure, accomplish a wide range of duties and tasks despite continual interruptions.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in managing a budget, requisition and purchasing, reconciling ledgers, tracking expenses, researching equipment and supplies.
• Experience in facility supervision.

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
• Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
• The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
• Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
• Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
• Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
• Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.

• Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
• Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
• Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
