The Opportunity
Are you passionate about hands-on work, safety, and supporting creative exploration? As a Shop Technician, you'll play a key role in maintaining a dynamic and fast-paced academic fabrication environment. You'll ensure that a wide range of analog fabrication equipment--such as woodworking and metalworking tools--is functional, clean, and safe for use. You'll also have the opportunity to work directly with students, faculty, and staff, providing training, support, and supervision to foster an environment where innovation thrives safely and effectively.
You'll be an essential part of a collaborative team, helping to deliver technical support for sculpture, model building, and material research--while actively contributing to the learning environment of the university community.
This position is an off shift.
What We Need
We're looking for someone who can:
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on a variety of analog fabrication tools and equipment.
- Maintain parts inventory and ensure shop cleanliness and functionality.
- Conduct safety orientations and hands-on training for students, faculty, and staff under the direction of the MPF Shop Manager.
- Track user training progress and help manage the training database.
- Work with the University's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) office to ensure compliance with all safety protocols and documentation.
- Monitor and enforce safety practices consistently across the shop.
- Provide technical support in areas such as wood and metalworking, sculpture, and model building.
- Offer expert advice on equipment use and project execution with minimal supervision.
- Supervise and mentor student workers, keeping them engaged, productive, and safe.
- Contribute to a culture of inclusion, cooperation, and respect, helping to maintain a healthy and welcoming environment for everyone.
If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it's ok if you don't.
- Familiarity with tools such as MIG and TIG welders, oxy-acetylene torches, cold cutoff saws, manual metal mills, table saws, band saws, planers, jointers, and drill presses.
- Experience training or mentoring others in a workshop or academic setting.
- Comfort navigating EH&S compliance tools and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) documentation.
- Exposure to robotics labs or working with 6-axis robotic arms.
- Experience with ceramics processes or equipment (throwing wheels, clay drying and storage, electric kilns with digital programming).
- Flexibility to take on projects or responsibilities that may occasionally fall outside of your core duties.
